A banana variety from China, Musa superba, was brought to Mauritius in 1982 and then shipped to the UK to be renamed Cavendish. Compared to local bananas, Cavendish produces more and tastes more delicious, gradually replacing local varieties with a variety from East Asia.

















However, due to the weak risk resistance of a single species, Cavendish is prone to infection with some deadly bacteria. Drugs used against this pathogen have already caused one-fifth of bananas worldwide to become infertile.
